A Love of Bees
Steve's fascination with bees began as a boy, learning alongside his grandfather, tending beehives on the farm.
Bee stings were inevitable, but Steve wore every sting like a badge of honour.
What began as a childhood passion became a lifelong calling, built on respect for the bees, the land, and the remarkable honey they produce.
Those early years shaped not only his passion for beekeeping, but also the values that continue to guide Mt Lyford Honey today.
ALPINE PROVENANCE
A Beekeeping Paradise
When Steve first travelled the winding gravel road to the Mt Lyford property, he discovered something extraordinary.
Surrounded by alpine mountains, native mānuka, mountain beech forests and wild flowering landscapes, the bees naturally flourished in one of New Zealand's most remote environments.
Far away from intensive agriculture and shaped by the rugged high country, the honey developed a flavour and character unlike anywhere else in New Zealand.

Something Extraordinary
Growing up, I hated the sickly-sweet honey from the supermarket.
That all changed when I tasted Mt Lyford Honey's Mountain Beech Honey.
Steve had been producing exceptional honey for decades, quietly exporting it in bulk around the world. I believed everyone should be able to taste honey this good.
I suggested to Steve to pack the honey and share it at local markets. The response was immediate.
"I've never tasted honey like this before," people would say.
Soon visitors were stopping by the farm to buy Mt Lyford honey, and Steve opened a small shop on the property to welcome them.

Today, Mt Lyford Honey continues a family tradition that began generations ago. From the remote alpine landscapes of Mt Lyford, we produce small-batch raw honey shaped by wild flowering landscapes, mountain air, and a deep respect for the bees.
We export worldwide and serve a faithful following here at home.
